Solute transport along preferential flow paths in unsaturated fractures

چکیده
Laboratory experiments were conducted to study solute transport along preferential flow paths in unsaturated, inclined fractures. Qualitative aspects of solute transport were identified in a miscible dye tracer experiment conducted in a transparent replica of a natural granite fracture. Additional experiments were conducted to measure the breakthrough curves of a conservative tracer introduced into an established preferential flow path in two different fracture replicas and a rock-replica combination. The influence of gravity was investigated by varying fracture inclination. The relationship between the travel times of the solute and the relative influence of gravity was substantially affected by two modes of intermittent flow that occurred: the snapping rivulet and the pulsating blab modes. The measured travel times of the solute were evaluated with three transfer function models' the axial dispersion, the reactors-in-series, and the lognormal models. The three models described the solute travel times nearly equally well. A mechanistic model was also formulated to describe transport when the pulsating blab mode occurred which assumed blobs of water containing solute mixed with residual pools of water along the flow path.

Three-dimensional hydrostratigraphic models created using multiple-point geostatistics promise to help quantify the role of preferential flow paths in a h eterogeneous glacially-deposited aquitard. The preferential flow paths allow for faster transport of fluids and solutes than in the surrounding matrix. Transport in preferential flow paths is governed by the hydraulic properties within the fl...

In this study, the effect of soil structure under saturated and unsaturated flow conditions on nonreactive bromide (BR) transport was investigated. The soil structure treatments consisted of undisturbed columns (prismatic and granular structures), and disturbed columns (single- grain structure). A constant concentration (C0= 0.005 M) of bromide was supplied on the surface of the columns in a st...
متن کاملPreferential Flow Phenomena in Partially-Saturated Porous Media
Preferential flow in unsaturated porous media, in the form of fingers and channels, has been observed to take place in different types of media and at different scales. The preferential flow is caused by fluid instabilities, created by density or viscosity differences, or because of heterogeneities in the geological media. In this study, two very different types of preferential flow problems ar...

A wide array of field observations, in situ testing, and rock and water sampling (and subsequent analyses) within the unsaturated zone (UZ) of Yucca Mountain demonstrate the importance of fractures to flow and transport in the welded tuffs. The abundance of fractures and the spatial variability in their hydraulic properties, along with the heterogeneity within lithologic formations, make evalua...

Abstract The occurrence of fingered preferential flow depends on both flow and porous media characteristics. The boundary condition of unsaturated infiltration has been investigated to assess whether it produces unstable wetting in homogeneous coarse sands. Laboratory tracer experiments were conducted in two coarse sand materials; for each sand material two initial conditions of air dry and fie...
